How to Reduce Wrinkles

Lying about your age can prove difficult as the wear and tear on your skin can give the game away! Whether you have just noticed a few cracks starting to appear or you’ve been fighting wrinkles for years, there’s plenty you can do to reduce them.

Whether it is through lifestyle changes, products or medical procedures, below are some of the things you can do to reduce wrinkles.

Keeping Out of the Sun

This is probably the top cause of wrinkles. There have been plenty of studies proving there is indeed a connection between wrinkles and too much sun. The important thing to remember is to avoid excessive exposure as it can cause sun damage to the skin. UV and UVA light can cause ageing of the skin as it breaks down the collagen and elastin components. Wrinkles will typically on the neck, face and back of your hands first as they are the areas that are generally most exposed to the sun.

Sun damage will not only make you look older, but it could prove fatal as it can result in skin cancer. So for these reasons, and the ones above, there are plenty of reasons for you to look after your sink in the sun.

Wearing sunscreen

Further adding to the previous point, if you do go out in the sun you should always put on sunscreen; even in winter. As previously mentioned, UV exposure is the main cause of skin ageing, and even on cloudy days up to 80% of the suns’ harmful UV rays can get to your skin.

Sleeping on Your Back

Never deny yourself of adequate sleep and always make sure you sleep on your back. If you sleep on your stomach or on your side you are vulnerable to sleep lines etched into your face which won’t disappear when you get up. By doing this over an extended period of time, it can lead to these lines becoming a permanent fixture on your face. Sleeping on silk sheets and pillowcases can lessen the effect.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!

Using a simple moisturiser without any special ingredients will reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. By doing this, the skin will look plumper and more supple rather than drier and worn out. You could even try one with a built in sunscreen.

There are some skin moisturisers and treatments containing special ingredients that claim they can reduce wrinkles. The anti-ageing ingredients can be found in many skin care products that be bought over-the-counter or through a prescription from a dermatologist.

How your skin looks can sometimes be reflected in what you are eating. You can feed your skin from the inside by eating a variety of foods including the usual ‘5 a day’. While there is no single miracle food that will definitely reduce wrinkles, eating foods that are known to contain vitamins, minerals and Omega-3 fatty acids can all contribute to overall look of your skin. Vitamins such as A, C, E, riboflavin, and niacin all help in keeping your skin healthy.

Furthermore, drinking plenty of water and reducing your intake of alcohol, will keep your skin dehydrated.

Skin Treatment

While it is certainly at the other end of the scale in comparison to the previous suggestions, anti wrinkle injectionssuch as Botox and dermal fillers should be considered as they relax the muscle just underneath the wrinkle, allowing the surface layer of skin to lie smooth and crease-free.

One of the advantages of using Botox is that it is a non-permanent treatment that gives great results in reducing wrinkles around the upper part of the face. These typically include frown lines across the forehead and around the sides of the eyes.

Furthermore, doctors use dermal fillers such as collagen, hyaluronic acid and other synthetic compounds to fill wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm work well to replace the volume lost from beneath the skin that occurs with age, and these help fill in the contours usually between the nose and mouth and around the chin. A treatment such as this will usually last between 4-6 months but can be longer over time. Remember to have these anti wrinkle injections injected by a properly qualified person who uses reputable products.
