How to Stay Healthy While in College

Going to college is a big deal, and the time you spend in college will be some of the best years of your life. Along with all the friends you’ll make and facts you’ll learn, you will also grow a lot as an individual.

 

College may be your very first experience of living on your own, which means that you also have to take care of yourself. Staying healthy while in college is important for multiple reasons: you don’t want to miss too much class, and you certainly don’t want to miss any social activities.

 

If you’re heading off to college, here are a few tips to help you stay healthy while earning your degree.

 

Practice good hygiene.

Taking care of yourself and staying healthy requires you to have good hygiene. You will come into contact with many people throughout the day, and you don’t want to collect any of their germs or illnesses. Because of this, you’ll want to be sure you wash your hands regularly, especially before you eat. You’ll also want to shower regularly too, and be sure to wear shower shoes if using public bathrooms.

 

Taking care of your teeth is also important. Be sure to brush and floss regularly, and see your dentist at least once or twice a year. Taking care of both your body and your mouth will keep diseases and illnesses at bay.

 

Eat a healthy diet.

College students may live off Ramen noodles and bread, but that type of diet isn’t good for your health. Be sure that you eat healthy and add vegetables and fruits to your diet on a regular basis. Stick with items that are low in fat too. There are plenty of meals to fit a college student’s budget; it just may require you to get creative.

 

Get some exercise.

Exercising is not only good for your health, it can also help keep you from gaining the dreaded Freshmen 15. Join some extracurricular activities while in college, such as an aerobics class or a sports team. You should also get a membership to your local gym or wellness center so that you have access to weights or a track to help you stay fit. You don’t have to do it every day, but try to exercise at least three times a week for optimal health.

 

Don’t overdo the drinks.

College is all about experimenting, and some of these experiments involve drinking alcohol. While you shouldn’t engage in drinking alcohol if you’re under the age of 21, you need to drink safely. Don’t overindulge in alcoholic beverages, and never drive if you are intoxicated. If you are in doubt, call a cab. If you think you may have drank too much, go to a hospital. Alcohol poisoning is serious, and it’s best to be treated as soon as possible.

 

Practice safe sex…or abstain.

There are multiple sexually transmitted diseases going around college campuses today, and if you want to stay healthy, you either need to practice safe sex by using condoms, or you need to abstain from sex altogether. Some STDs may last a lifetime, such as herpes, and others can be fatal, such as HIV.
